I just received an email Netflix, (as probably everyone who has a Netflix subscription has) that states Netflix has decided to keep the DVDs in house and has killed off Qwikster before it got started. If you go out to qwickster.com the site now redirects back to netflix.com. Netflix stated that the July price change where they split out the DVD and streaming plans was necessary, but nothing else will change.
To me it looks like one of two things has happened.
- Rumors we running around that Netflix was looking for some one to buy them, namely Amazon. This was all here-say and I have no idea if it were true. But if it were true, the rumor also said Amazon wanted the physical DVD inventory off Netflix’s books, hence Netflix spinning off the DVD division. If this were the case, that deal probably fell through.
- Or the more likely scenario, and the reason I think Netflix decided to keep DVDs in house, is that so many people dropped, and there was such an uproar from the community, AND the fact that their stock has literally plummeted since making the announcement, that Netflix decided it wasn’t worth it. Check out their stock for the last 30 days showing it at a high of 210 30 days ago to 111 now.
Either way, I know a lot of people that will be happy that Netflix decided to keep the DVD plans. You can see the full letter I received below:
